The first half of the year is already over, it always flies by so quick! We’re stopping to review the mobile app download leaders for the first half of 2022 (through June 30th). The two lists in this post do not include mobile games. To get a feel for how things are changing, you can review Apptopia’s 2021 worldwide and US download leaders before diving into the below.

We’ve also released H1 2022 top charts for Travel, Retail, Fintech, Entertainment, Food & Drink, and Health & Fitness.

Overall H122 WW

Even though TikTok is expectedly leading the pack, it’s on pace to finish 2022 with less installs than 2021, while Instagram and Snapchat are on pace to finish with slightly more installs in 2022 than they had last year. Zoom, which was a top installed app globally and in the US last year, is not on either top chart through the first half of this year.

What I find more interesting though is that two ecommerce apps (Meesho and Shopee) have broken into the top 10 chart. For the past three years in our full year charts, there hasn’t even been one ecommerce/retail/shopping app appear as an app download leader. You can learn more about both Meesho and Shopee in our latest global mobile retailing report.

Overall H122 US

TikTok also leads new installs for the United States. As per usual, Meta owns four of the 10 most downloaded apps so far this year. Like the global chart above, the U.S. chart also includes two ecommerce players, SHEIN and Amazon. Cash App is the only finance app found in either top chart. While mostly known as a peer-to-peer payments app, it also enables retail investing, crypto purchasing, as well as providing a checking account w/debit card.

Even though HBO Max was a top installed app in the U.S. for 2021, so far this year it has been replaced with Disney+. Disney has simply had more popular releases this year such as West Side Story, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Moon Knight. It will be fun to see which apps fall out of the top charts and which ones break their way in for our annual full year worldwide and US download leaders later this year.
