Q1 2022 Earnings Recap: 3 cases when mobile signal beat consensus
Jun 07, 2022

While public companies only release information quarterly, Apptopia provides its data daily. And as mobile has become a key sales and engagement channel, our equity research team has found correlations between our mobile performance metrics and quarterly reported KPIs. With this, investors can gain a directional read on a KPI prior to a company reporting.
Mobile intelligence is one of the best ways to compliment an existing investment process. With it, Investors are no longer blind to the day-to-day performance of their equities. Below are three examples where Apptopia Alpha Intelligence saw what Wall Street did not.
Duolingo (DUOL)
Like many other tech stocks, many were hesitant to believe Duolingo would continue its rise. Yet, we noticed an uptick in app usage and In App Purchase Revenue with people wanting to learn Ukrainian. This is a great example of mobile activity catching trends that wouldn’t be reported on until earnings. Sure enough, DUOL reported a 1Q beat. Further, it raised guidance for 2Q, and its stock jumped 30%.
Robinhood (HOOD)
The Robinhood app’s decrease in Monthly Active Users and Sessions continued from 4Q into 1Q, which led us to believe that lower transaction revenue would follow. These trends in user engagement are divergent from management’s comments regarding incremental improvements in trading volume. Upon reporting, the stock missed consensus with transaction-based revenues coming in 16% below what was expected. Once again we had the correct read here.
Hellofresh (HFG)
Hellofresh was featured in our earnings review, something we publish for our Alpha Intelligence clients on a quarterly basis. The number one thing that made HFG an undeniable ticker to keep an eye on was our Sessions figure increasing +57% YoY. This tremendous growth in app activity was reflective of HFG’s earnings call. HFG Active customers came in +3%, and US Revenues +8% above consensus. If you would like to gain an insight on a number of companies you can access a free report on the tickers of your choice below.
